In February of 2009, the Mayor of Guidan Roumji, Niger and the Town Manager of Acton, Massachusetts signed a Sister City agreement to facilitate a partnership between the two communities. The goal of this partnership is to foster cultural, social and business exchanges between the two communities (see document below).
The two Sister City High Schools and Gates Elementary school have exchanged letter writing and pictures. Local businesses in Acton have contributed to an annual African Drum fundraiser event. The Acton Memorial Library has donated books to the English students of Guidan Roumji (G.R.).
Future initiatives proposed have been hosting students from Guidan Roumji in Acton and sending Acton students to Niger. Local US businesses are exploring the option of selling and donating solar powered equipment(stoves, lamps, flashlights) to merchants in Guidan Roumji. Crafts people of Guidan Roumji are looking to sell their products in stores in Acton (blankets, leather sandals, jewelry).
